What is an out-the-door price on a car?

Updated

The out-the-door price is the total you pay to drive the car away: the vehicle's price after any discounts or incentives, plus dealer fees, any add-ons, sales tax, and title and registration charges. It is the one number that captures everything, so ask for it itemized and in writing before you agree to anything.

Why it matters more than the price

Two dealers can quote the same vehicle price and very different totals, because fees and add-ons differ from store to store. A low price with high fees is not a good deal. Comparing out-the-door totals is the only way to compare like with like.

A monthly payment hides the total too: a longer loan or lease can lower the payment while the car costs more overall. Agree the total first, then the financing.

How to get one in writing

  • Name the exact car: year, model, trim, and ideally the specific vehicle on the lot.
  • Ask for an itemized out-the-door price, every line above, by email or text.
  • Ask which add-ons are already installed and which you can decline.
  • Keep the trade-in as its own line, so it cannot hide a change elsewhere.
  • Check that the contract you sign matches the written quote line for line.

That is what DriveEasier does for you: itemized out-the-door quotes in writing, compared with you, and one exact quote to approve. See How it works.
